    Title:
Khmer Bronze Female Deity Figure, Angkor Wat, 'Bayon' Style. Cambodia 17th C.
    Description:
An exquisite 17th century bronze image of a Female Deity Figure, probably that of 'Uma', beautifully executed in traditional Angkorian 'Bayon' style of the Khmer Era, elegantly modeled with intricate detail, measuring 6.0 inches (15.24cm) in height.
    XXX
She stands in 'Samabhanga' with her feet firmly planted on a small square plinth, with both arms extended holding attributes in each hand, depicted gracefully poised, with a slender profile, and well defined naked upper body, partially covered in a long stylized vertical striated sampot, worn high on the hips and low at the waist, secured by a decorative belt oramented with hanging pendants, and complimented by a wide central panel draped to the garments hem.
    XXX
She wears vertically braided hair gathered into a dome-shaped 'Ushnisha', bound by an inter-connected 'Diadem' crown, rising to a small ornament finial on top. Her indigenous face is serene with a slightly downcast expression, beautiful almond-shaped eyes, with arched eyebrows set above a prominent nose, and nicely detailed bow-shaped lips with an insipid smile. Elongated earlobes frame her face, adorned with Khmer style triangular-shaped earring pendants. She is further adorned with a lovely jeweled necklace draped with a central hanging pendant, jeweled armlets and bracelets on both of her arms, and anklelets at her feet.
    XXX
The figure has a smooth naturally aged dark brown patina, lightly encrusted with molted variations of greenish-blue malachite oxidation, on the entire piece. This skillfully executed image of Uma, is a superb example of the Khmer culture and its dynamic artistry. Its creator has modeled a gracious interpretation of the divine iconic goddess in human form, with lively imagination and conviction.
This era of Khmer Art produced an extremely light weight bronze, thinly poured, as with this piece, is correct to the late Angkorian period, from the sixteenth to the early seventeenth century.
