Description
This is an original stand-alone Antique Majapahit Terracotta / Clay Seal of a Chicken from the Indonesian island of Java. The Majapahit Kingdom was a Hindu-Buddhist Dynasty that lasted over two hundred years and was spread out over large areas of present day Indonesia, Malaysia & Thailand. The royal capital was principally centered in Eastern Java in a site called Trowulan close to the present day city of Surabaya. My father purchased all of his collection of Majapahit pieces in the vicinity of Surabaya in the mid 1960's when he was a Foreign Service Officer with the U.S Embassy in Jakarta. These original figures date from the 14th Century to 15th Century. These wonderful / whimsical Terracotta fragments have a rustic quality to them and once permanently mounted and/or displayed show beautifully. There is a detailed article regarding this collecting category in the Nov/Dec 2000 edition of Arts of Asia.Stamp Dimensions: 1 1/4 inch high, 2 inches wide Weight: 1.9 ounces
