    Description

Antique Khmer Sandstone Carving Kala of Angkor Fragment Relic
This Khmer sandstone lintel fragment, elaborately carved in bas-relief, depicts 'Kala of Angkor', one of three principal animal deities in both Buddhist and Hindu mythology, a toothy lion-style creature, with the body of a man, regarded as a ferocious monster symbolic of absolute time in its all devouring aspect, and associated with the destructive side of the god Shiva.
The panel is in excellent condition, unaltered and unrepaired, a well-proportioned section, once part of a complex lintel theme, chiseled from a solid block of sandstone, beautifully modeled with detailing still clearly visible, and with no evidence of the features being re-carved. The relatively smooth, yet somewhat grainy surface shows even wear on the entire piece, with a wonderfully aged patina, showing normal wear, with minor degradation of the surface from age, and the environment in which it was maintained. It is mounted and framed for display as wall art.
