Our woodshop is always buzzing with work on wooden boats, refitting yacht casework and interiors and all sorts of other fun, and it is a rare day that d/a’s and sanders of various sorts aren’t heard buzzing somewhere nearby.  Close to all of our work stations is a good supply of Abranet and Abralon.   Yellow Mirka tools loaded with Mirka Abrasives are all over the place.  The Mirka Brand and color has fast become the Standard for the Marine Industry.  Try it and you will know why.
One of our Mottos at Jean Street Shipyard is that we only sell the products that we really use ourselves in our own shop, and really believe in ourselves.  If its not good enough for us – we wont sell it to you!  Almost 30 years ago at a woodworking show, a Mirka Rep gave me a few sheets of Mirka Abranet to try.  (hard to believe since back then we were actually a 3m abrasives dealer).  After a few months of sitting on a shelf in the shop I finally tried it and ever since that very first day Abranet  has been our Abrasive of choice.  One try and we were sold - Its that different and that much better !  I believe it will be the same when you try it yourself – its that much better.  It is the most innovative solution to controlling sanding dust, but it is also the finest abrasive paper we have ever used.  Longest lasting – most consistent – best finish !
It would be enough to brag on the fine, super consistent scratch free sanding you get that is second to none among the world of abrasives.  But that’s just scratching the surface (if you will pardon the pun).
For Dust collection, forget choosing between 5 hole, 8 hole etc,   Abranet is just that – a net, a mesh – it’s a screen so every square millimeter of the Abrasive is collecting dust.  We even have a mirka sander with Mirka Abranet set up in our Spray Finish Room for touch ups, that’s how confident we are on its dust free ability.  If used with the right Mirka Pad on a quality d/a, such as the Mirka  DEROS and a good quality HEPA vacuum, such as the Mirka Vacuum, it is truly virtually dust free.  If you already own a
or the Festool Vacuum, or the Fein Vacuum that is HEPA rated ?  No problem, the Mirka tools will work just fine with them too.
– Both the air and the surface of whatever you are sanding stay virtually dust free.  It is so truly amazing – you have to try it and see it to believe it.  Dust free is great for a safe and healthy workplace, but as a side benefit, the fast extraction of dust also helps to prevent “pilling”.  Every tradesman, not just woodworkers, have felt the frustration of having a workpiece almost perfect just to have it suddenly get scratched by dust pilling up in the abrasive.  Just keep a light touch (don’t ever push hard) on your sander and use Mirka Abranet and a good dust collector and the heartbreak of pilling is almost forever eliminated.
The secret to sanding with a light touch is a very sharp and consitant abrasive particle.  Mirka Abranet has you covered there !  It is not an abrasive screen, it is a very evenly sized screen with the abrasive material bonded to it.  It is the consistency of the abrasive that gives you the flat scratch-free surface.  That is where Abranet really shines head and shoulders around any other abrasive.
But its Amazing Dust – Free properties are not its only attractiveness.  It is also an amazing abrasive.  Longer lasting and washable.
It is not an “abrasive screen” it is a screen with a consistent sized abrasive perfectly bonded to to the screen’s fibers.  It is the perfectly flat, scratch-free abrasive.  Unlike some of the “look-alike” products, the bond is amazing.  In other products, the bond quickly fails and soon you are sanding with the screen.  (more like scratching up your work with only the screen)  We have found it wears significantly longer  then any other brand we have used, and in 178 years in business, I can safely say we have tried them all.  That alone would be enough to make it the most economical abrasive out there, but it doesn’t stop there.  As every woodworker knows, very often is softer wood or sappy woods or when sanding substrates that already have finish on them, the abrasives will sometimes clog up long before they wear out, but the result is unfortunately the same, time to get another sheet!  Not so fast with Abranet.  Although designed primarily for dry sanding, we have found that with the screen construction and the waterproof properties of the bond of Abranet, we routinely take the clogged abrasive to the sink and give them a quick wash and rinse with warm water (sometimes a little spray of soap  and/or a quick wipe with a finger brush) and set them aside to dry.  The clogging is gone, and since the abrasive itself it still sharp and not worn out, we get easily two or three more uses out of every sheet.  Try that with other abrasives.   As a bonus, because Abranet with its sharp and consistent abrasives can be used with a lighter touch than other abrasives, clogging is not as likely to begin with, but how great that when it does, its not the end of that piece of abrasive.  We find this a great benefit in our shop.
